Tony Bowden wrote about a common pet peeve with todays tabbed browsers: the close tab key combination (Cmd-W/Ctrl-W) is just a wee bit too close (on a QWERTY keyboard) to the close browser key combination (Cmd-Q/Ctrl-Q). The problem is that opening up many tabs is a common way to make note of something you want to visit later, and every so often you'll quit the browser instead of closing the current tab (and thus lose all of the tabs with things you wanted to visit).
It's easy to see how this came about. Cmd-W is a the canonical key sequence to close a window, and Cmd-Q is a the canonical key sequence to quit. Most apps will bring up a dialog to check to make sure you want to quit when there's unsaved work. However, the idea of "unsaved work" doesn't really apply to browsers.
Instant usability error. Go figure.
