In a fit of ontology, this tidbit passed through xml-dev on the derivation of the term "lox", canonically used to describe a smoked, cured salmon:
Indeed the word has Indo-European roots: compare the Hindi word lakh, meaning specifically 10^5 today, but originally just "a whole lot", referring to the density and prolificacy of salmon spawns.In English, Lox appears to be derived from the Norwegian "laks", which simply means "salmon". There appears to be a similar link between "laks" and the Irish "Leix".
Now, if all of these XML folks could just find a way to make XML more like Lox, then perhaps this hornet's nest of complexity might have a chance of being useful. Or at least tasty. :-)
