Geeks out for dinner

Why is it that when you get a group of 12 or so random geeks at a restaurant, anarchy reigns supreme?

Why is it that when you get a group of 12 or so Perl geeks at a restaurant, there's a vague semblance of order?

I've seen this pattern repeated over and over again. Surely there's a self-selecting sample involved (when I'm out with Perl geeks, I notice or want to notice a lack of anarchy). But this pattern holds true not only with the local Perl crowd (wherever I happen to call "local" at the time), or with a bunch of random Perlfolk.

I'd be interested to know what what you mean by "random" here. Maybe, for any 12 random people, the more they have in common, the more order there is. "Perl geeks" have more in common than just "geeks".

Other hypothesis: Perl geeks are even less sociable than most geeks. We like to Do Things our own Way. We're soloists. Hackers. Pair programming in Perl makes about as much sense as pair stapling in the copier room.
