Zoning

Nothing helps me get into that feeling of the zone like some strange-but-interesting-yet-unimportant electronic music. The last few weeks, I've been stopping by the Sound Garden in Fels Point a little too often. First, it was to stock up on some good jazz. Recently, it's been for some stuff I've never heard before, but makes for good background noise. Things like Zero 7, Air (never heard anything of theirs except «La Femme d'Argent» before), and Crystal Method. The Chemical Brothers, Radiohead and Kruder & Dorfmeister are also in the mix, but I've heard too much of them to put them into heavy rotation.

That's the problem with electronic distraction noise: it's got a terribly short shelf life. Case in point -- I can't bear to listen to any trent reznor anymore.

Oh well. It'll be time for Miles, Mingus and Monk again soon. And maybe some Jimi and SRV.

I find Tiesto, Astral Projection, Captain Tinrib, and Corsten to be good motivating music. I have >12 gig of electronica mp3s, all I now need is some sensible way to listen to it at work :)

You mean like a 20GB MP3 jukebox? :-)

I'm actually more tempted by the 40gig USB drives you can get for about $200. I was thinking that would be pretty handy to transfer stuff to work and back.

Here is my current staple of music:
The Dismemberment Plan
Gang of Four (No, not the pattern guys)
Fugazi
Samiam
Knapsack
Charlie Hunter (Very good jazz)
Shadowy Men on a Shadowy Planet (they did the Kids in the Hall theme, and the song on some of the latest Taco Bell commercials)
