State Quarters

There was an ad in the Sunday magazine this week from the United States Commerative Mint (or somesuch), not affiliated with the United States Mint, the United States Government, or any other government. The ad was hocking one free uncirculated Ohio quarter for everyone in the country in order to comply with the law requiring speedy distribution of pocket change (I think), all for the price of a self-addressed stamped envelope and three stamps.

The ad proclaimed that mint condition, uncirculated state quarters have gone up in value as much as 456%. (But only the mint condition, uncirculated ones mind you, and only the prettier quarters at that. Some have appreciated in value only 114% or so...)

So, a question for the peanut gallery: how much are mint condition, uncirculated state quarters actually worth?

  1. $  1.12
  2. $456.00
  3. About $1 (the cost of 3 stamps)
  4. About $10, when using mint condition, uncirculated state quarters to build up a mailing list you can then resell to direct marketers across the country.
