Scenes from DC

Regardless of what plotip says, the sole national language in the US is English. You are reminded of this when riding the Metro in DC. Although DC is one of the few places on the planet where you will find people speaking any(@LANGUAGE) (probably including Esperanto and Klingon, sadly enough), the Metro is an area where everything is in English -- every map, turnstyle, sign, advertisement, ticket, and announcement.

English is so dominant, you could be forgiven if you thought you had just entered the United Federation of Planets, or some bizarro world where babelfish evolved the capability of intercepting visual stimuli.

After last week's events, Metro started broadcasting 1-800-I-FOUND-A-SUSPICIOUS-PACKAGE announcements throughout the system on a semi-regular basis. I've heard those messages before, but generally only when Metro ran out of announcements about train delays.

The odd part is that the new messages that started this week are nearly always in Spanish.

Hm.....Does Code Orange mean that every threat, up to and including Montezuma's Revenge, is treated as credible?

(And I thought that Code Orange meant that acme is coming to town.)
