For all of you in northern climes who understand what snow is about, here is how we do it the Washington, DC area.
ObPerl: When the biggest snow storm of the year leaves negative accumulation[1] on the street, it's really hard to justify staying home, getting out some fleece, putting on some hot chocolate and camping out in front of the fireplace and hacking until the thaw. Nope. Just another day to come into the office and leave those projects behind...
[1] Negative Accumulation: when 6"^H^H 3"^H^H 2" of snow doesn't stick because the roads are too warm, and winds up cleaning off whatever accumulated crud was already there.
I was personally in DC with my wife on Jan 22 and witnessed the craziest panic buying I've ever seen in a grocery store. Before that I used to make fun of Texans for running to the grocery store like crazy before a little snow. Now I think what I see here is nothing.
A week ago we had about 1" on the roof, and of course nothing on the road... schools closed for a week.
While we were in DC last week on vacation, we saw the event that set up your "Negative Accumulation" (nice coinage!) by leaving a little on the leaves. DC was very pretty, shrouded in snow; we appreciated the Senators' Subway all the more that day, perfect day for the staff-lead Capitol Tour! Your drivers seemed to be handling snow better than reputation predicted.
