Sign of the times

I caught this tidbit on a mailing list today:

You spent a whole lot of time explaining endianness when a link to Wikipedia might have saved you a lot of time:
Just a sign that Wikipedia is at or near critical mass. I expect that we'll all start to see this much more regularly.

Your definition the same as mine?

What happens when the wikipedia entry changes between the time when one person posts the link and another person references it? I don't think the entries change in a substantive way very often, but I suppose it could happen.

Yes, but that's the same risk that you run when you link to any web page, wiki or not.

Wikipedia is a well-known target, and they tend to have a larger group of volunteers doing spam removal and fact checking than your average wiki. At worst, it's better than just googling for a term -- you never know what you'll find, or even if it's in the ballpark. At least with wikipedia, you've got a decent shot at getting something accurate enough to get an idea across, which is much better than spending time writing up a description from scratch on a mailing list (and then arguing over the finer points of that description instead discussing of the topic at hand).

Now you see it

Too bad you hadn't read this before the LinuxWorld Quiz Show 2 years ago . . .
