On the way home today, volunteers were handing out blue placards to DC residents who voted for Kerry in November. Their goal is to "paint the town blue".
At first, I was a little puzzled why anyone would try to salt old wounds two months after the election. Then I realized that next thursday is a federal holiday. (Duh!)
...but Inauguration Day isn't actually a federal holiday. It's a local holiday that the federal (and most local) governments recognize in the D.C. and the immediately surrounding counties in Maryland and Virginia. Feds elsewhere have to work.

"Feds elsewhere?" Isn't that an urban legend like Sasquatch or low-carb donuts?;-) Re:Not that it matters....

Only to those that actually work inside the beltway.
:-) The truth is, there are far more federal employees outside the D.C. area than in it.
