Redundancy

Something is taking down the power grid in a goodly part of the Northeast US, parts of Ontario and Ohio. Early speculation is that this is a "natural" disaster centered around Niagara falls, much like the cascade failures of the 1960s and 1970s.

The New York Times website is still up and running, at least from where I sit near Washington, DC.

Funny, that.

power outage

We were watching different news last night (CNN, abc, cbs, etc), when they said that some odd number of plants all shut down within 3 minutes (or nine seconds, 1 reporter mentioned) of each other, after the first one went off line.

Anyway, we'll probably find out, or not, that they turn off automatically so they don't go overbudget to make up for the loss of some other supplier.

I remember (in the good old days) when the other plants would kick in more generators automatically to make up for any power loss somewhere.

Not a profitable premise anymore, obviously.
