This tidbit comes as a shock: Ximian has been purchased by Novell.
Is this about Ximian running out of cash, Novell running out of relevance, or a little of both? Or is some other unrelated factor at work here?
I still use Ximian 1.x on one of my boxes and I like it JUST fine. I think Mono is interesting, but will it become the VB of Linux? I look forward to eventually installing XD2. I like Novell too, particularly it's Network Directory system, aped by Microsoft with Active Directory. If Novell continues to focus on network management, they may yet have a future. IPX isn't really what Novell betting the company on.
That said (I like both companies), I can't helping but think that these companies are DEC/Compaq bound. I hope I'm wrong and that we see some really surprizing and delightful user management tools for Linux from Novell.
Somehow, I doubt it.
