A friend of mine is looking to set up a WiFi network in his small 1BR apartment in a rather crowded apartment building. I told him to use the standard WiFi 2-step: restricting MAC addresses and using 128-bit WEP encryption (with periodically rotating keys).
I said that the best solution for his circumstances would be a new Airport Extreme, which can throttle the power and reduce the effective range of the base station. Unfortunately, he's not a Mac user, so Airports aren't going to do him much good (too hard to configure with a WinTel box). He's looking at the standard D-Link/Linksys/NetGear type equipment.
Are there any other base stations that have similar capabilities to limit the effective range of a network?
