More Solaris Fun

Our DBA is having fun installing Oracle on one of our Solaris boxes. The Oracle installer seems to crash the system. This is the same installer used on two other Solaris boxes with no problems whatsoever.

As luck would have it (or not depending on your point of view) our sysadmin group have a support agreement with Sun. Those fine Sun 'experts' over the course of two weeks have diagnosed the following as the cause of the problem:

1. Bad CPU - replaced. 2. Bad Motherboard - replaced. 3. Bad Power Supply - replaced 4. Bad Memory module - replaced. 5. Patch application - all patches applied.

Of course, none of that actually worked - the box still crashes when the Oracle installer runs.

So now Sun are sending out the big guns. Two (count 'em) engineers are coming out to our office today to watch the Oracle installer to try and figure out the problem.

Wow

I've seen the installer itself crash or hang, but I've never seen it crash the whole system.

Welcome to the hell that is Solaris.

LOL.

Yeh, I can be working away quite happily in my cubie when I'll hear 'fuck' from the DBA a few cubies down. Sure enough, all my terminal windows are completely locked up and a quick call to the sysadmin group confirm that the box has crashed and they are re-booting as we speak. Nice.
