tools maketh the man...

Like a thread that ran on WinCVS - GUI CVS client for us command line impaired Win32 users ;)

  • Cygwin - Emulator thingie for Unix (in case you start showing Unix terminal withdrawal symptoms)
  • 4NT - for all the things that the cmd prompt won't do for you
  • Putty - Telnet/ssh client that rocks

Lots more where that came from, I suppose.. but this is just so I scribble them down somewhere..

    Try Unix

If, like me, you find yourself spending all day in tools like putty, cygwin, 4NT/cmd, and a nice text editory, you should try switching to Linux for a bit. You'll probably find yourself right at home, and more productive than ever (since cygwin is pretty slow for a lot of things).

For those of us locked into the corporate world of Outlook, MS Office etc., there's usually not much choice but to use tools like cygwin.

That lock-in is often possible to get around. We're an MS network here, and yet I have linux - I can browse the network, use Exchange for email (via IMAP) and the address book (via LDAP), and I open and write Word documents with OpenOffice.

But I do know *all* about IT services giving you hassle if you switch. I tend to just ignore them though ;-)
