Career programmer, guerilla guide to an imperfect world, combined with Dilbert, you have the perfect corporate cynicism tutorial. Some situations, unfortunately, are all too true..
Evaluating options on a web interface thing that I have to cook up.. I need to make a web configuration system for a system written in gcc.. the messaging library is all C++. Translating that to Java or interfacing with XS.. or CGI using C.. choices, choices.. (probably wont be Perl, no one else knows it here, although there are quite a few Java folk, just not looking forward to the morass that is JNI). I dont know XS at all, never even tried writing a C based Perl module, but I have used JNI before, so maybe thats the way to go... hmm, well, still time to decide, I suppose.
Finished Order of the Phoenix last week. Good story. Slightly less appealing to my niece(s) than the other books, I'd say, but still a good read. Only distressing part is that the local bookshops scalp a sizeable chunk of cash onto the list price if you give into the hype and buy it early. Also got my hands on a copy of the XSLT cookbook, which is nice.. lots of reading and experimentation material for the next few weeks.
and yippee, Frozen Throne is released tomorrow.. (and some friends will be getting it early tomorrow)
