loud hard drives, brute-force attacks

I came back from dinner to hear the server on my desk clicking loudly and consistantly. It was a regular hard drive read/write sound, but the server is an old enough machine that the constant "tik tik" every other second quickly became annoying.

It was yet another brute-force SSH dictionary attack. I haven't seen many live attacks in my life that weren't during a hacking contest, so I was a little creeped out watching my auth.log grow as some script somewhere was badgering my little Dell. (The more experienced can feel free to mutter, "You ain't seen nuthin, kid.")
