They're like diners who show up at the resturant without reservations, demand the best table, order one entree to split, are pissed that we "messed up" the order and "forget" the duck a la orange for the second person at the table, so refuse to pay and storm out.
Just like dealing with IRC idiots, making unusual concessions for self-important, meglomanicial clients only backfires. And these jokers had concession after concession -- emergency notice project, complete scope creep, and, of course, no payment, because they didn't get everything they asked for -- an arbitrary amount of work -- in a fixed period of time -- even though they got a first class corporate site in six weeks.
