I think I just about understand what it is by now, but not well enough to be able to explain it snappily.It's a little like abstract algebra, except more abstract and less algebraic. It's a formalism used for making precise analogies between superficially unrelated mathematical theories.
Joseph Goguen has a nice paper A Categorical Manifesto, which explains clearly and convincingly why category theory is useful in computer science.
John Baez says (in this web page):
"If we try to generalize the heck out of the concept of a group, keeping associativity as a sacred property, we get the notion of a category."which is as good a slogan as any.
