Just One Of Those Things

And so I've got my pon^H^H^Hlaptop! Installed RedHat (7.2) on it, and recompiled a lovely kernel (with ACPI support, following a suggestion found on the web, from a guy who has the same hardware and the same OS.) Set up networking (local, private ethernet) and sshd. Installed a decent version of vim.

For now, the plan is to have the laptop configured with a private 192.168.1.x IP address, and not to set up any NAT. My workstation supplies the DSL connection to the outer world. I'll see next year if this configuration is convenient enough.

Things to do : configure the modem and dialup. (I need to do this before this week-end, as I'll be on vacation in Nice for the week of Christmas. If I fail to set it up, no Christmas P5P summary! If I can't use the built-in modem, I'll plug a more conventional serial line modem.) -- Install Subversion (so I can check out things from my repositories on my workstation, notably my shell/vim setup files and the bleadperl sources). This implies that I've a working Subversion/Apache 2 server on my workstation, with access limited to localhost and 192.168.1.x addresses. -- Install sshd on my workstation, so I can log in there from the laptop (and do X11 forwarding for interesting X clients, such as Mozilla and my mailer, the ones that need an Internet connection.) -- Install a decent window manager (WindowMaker ? wmx ?) -- Figure out why the sound kernel modules don't work. -- Set up some CD recorder application (never done that before). -- Get some CDs of RedHat 8.0 and upgrade, just to play with the UTF8 locales versus bleadperl bugs. -- Uh, and find some funky hostnames.
