Post 1.0 Firefoxes just put a bar up at the top of the screen. Do you have the latest version of Firefox?
There's probably a config option to disable the bar, too. If not, I'll bet there soon will be.
I, too, am deliberately using Firefox without Flash (and Java, for that matter). And about three weeks ago, I started using Adblock with Filterset.G

Install the Flashblock extension, and you won't be bothered by Flash but can still activate it for pages where you want to see it.
