Best Team Position

SportsCenter tonight did a piece on the great center fielders in New York Yankees history: DiMaggio, Mantle, Williams, and now Damon. Not bad.

But, I'd personally rather have the Red Sox left field: Williams, Yaz, Rice, Ramirez.

What is the best position on a team? Is there a better one? In other sports?

More amazing...

is that the Red Sox left fielders have a nearly continuous streak of 65 years:

  • Williams: 1939-1960 (ignoring Army service)
  • Yastremski: 1961-1983 (regularly playing outfield until 1977)
  • Rice: 1974-1989 (regularly playing outfield until 1987)
  • Mike Greewell: 1985-1996 (a career .303 hitter. Williams is at .298 and Damon is at .290)
  • Manny Ramirez: 2001-present

That's the amazing part. The gap between Mantle and Williams is 25 years.
