What they said, too.

Consider the source

Note that the source of this paranoia is Andrew Orlowski, who isn't exactly unbiased in his coverage of all things Google. He's been writing paranoid rants about the company for a year or two now, and adding Orkut to the mix is just an extension of that ongoing tirade.

Not that this particular point is invalid, mind you -- these Friendster clone sites are gathering a lot of demographic data for as yet unclear purposes -- but it isn't necessarily anything to get paranoid about.

The Register is a fun rag and all, but reporters like Mr Orlowski are so far off the deep end that they make sites like, say, Slashdot look like paragons of journalistic integrity :-) :-) :-)]

There is no free lunch

I'm glad someone dug through the Privacy Policy (these legal documents these days are quite windy and daunting, especially if you just have a small textarea to read 'em in), but this type of stuff doesn't surprise me.

Orkut is not a non-profit or a FSF project ... it plans to make $. So it's gonna use its assets (your personal information) to make its money, one way or another.

If you don't like it, don't sign up -- which is what your post says, really. Again, I commend someone finding the flaws, exposing them and making the right and personal decision.

But I cannot condemn Orkut from trying to make money, especially when they do spell it out in their policy .. which is much better than a bait-n-switch scheme.

Peace,

Jason
