I'm in love with my iBook and 802.11

Saturday I got a midrange iBook, plus setup for 802.11b at home, which we also have (somewhat) at work. I am digging it highly.

My mom asked me why I got an Apple laptop. "So that I can run OS X", I told her. I seriously think that OS X could make a big dent in the Windows market share. It's got the GUI, and it's got the Unix. What more does one need?

Other bits of joy that I love:

  • Effortlessly switching between home and work network configurations
  • The little strength meter on the 802.11b screen
  • Being able to swap my one USB mouse between my desktop G4 at work and my iBook
  • The ease of popping into sleep mode: Just close the lid
  • The little light that pulses to show that it's just sleeping
  • iChat (now if only it would do IRC)

I didn't get it just for fun, of course. I have two Perl-related book projects in the works, and I didn't want to be tied down to my desk to work on them, since certain people in my house tend to crawl around and get into mischief.
