Hmm... so, after a day of discussion on perl5-porters it seems that the behaviour of SUPER:: is deliberate. Which I still think is a great pity.
So, I'll have to write HYPER.pm, like SUPER but better. I've got the bones of it, now I just need to write a comprehensive test suite with as many different edge cases as I can think of, release it to CPAN and write an article about it for perl.com.
