About a year and a half ago, October 2002 to be specific, long time
Perl hacker
Mark Jason Dominus came up with
the idea of a mailing list devoted to weekly Perl quizzes, written by
him and (hopefully :) solved by the Perl community. See the
original email announcing the list for details.
The list was very successful, generating many interesting discussions on
the corresponding
perl-qotw-discuss
discussions mailing list. Alas, the burden of writing both quizzes and
summaries, week afer week, grew to be too much for MJD, with the sad result
that the list eventually came to a halt. After a long hiatus, prompted by
someone asking if the list was dead, MJD emailed the list and
proposed a new scheme for reviving the list- namely, that people would
volunteer to write both quiz and summary, one or two per week, and MJD
would act only as overall list administrator. Response was enthusiastic,
and a new quiz was released shortly after, with hopefully more to follow.
So, if you feel like sharpening your Perl skills, feel free to come on in
and register to both
perl-qotw
and
perl-qotw-discuss
mailing lists (hit the "eSubscribe" link at the bottom of the page
in order to subscribe) - the
list is once again alive and open for business :)
Just remember that now more than ever the success of the list depends on the
community, so if you can contribute a quiz (i.e. the quiz and a sample
solution + short writeup afterwards), please do so.
