I had a manager describe to me a situation he had with a customer. He managed IT consultants and the customer was running out of money. The customer hoped that they could keep the consultants on for a few weeks as a matter of customer relations.
The manager had an answer, "Let's take a look at what you are saying, by definition, a customer is someone who pays for goods or services."
