My dad made a comment yesterday that amused me. The focus of the development work for the 2012 Olympics is in the area of Stratford, east London. This is being touted as of benefit to the East End's economy. However, given the large number of Polish builders etc now here, he observed that it's more likely to benefit the east end of Gdansk than London. :-)
(Not that my dad has any objection whatsoever to builders, plumbers etc who turn up on time and work hard. Which the Polish seem to have a reputation for; something that generally isn't said about the native tradesmen.)
A comment that (IIRC) Mike made some weeks ago was that you can tell the Poles have arrived - not only are there Polish language newspapers in London, there are now free Polish language newspapers in London. (with a little warning in English on the stand that if you don't speak Polish, there is no point taking one. This being a key difference from the free newpapers for the ex-pat Australians, New Zealander and South Africans.)
