You should try out ocaml. You might like it, too.
Perl is inappopriate for some applications, where precision and efficiency
are important.
Of course, perl -ple is super-glorious for those frequent situations where
precision and efficiency don't matter so much.

On the contrary, perl -pe is excellent for applications where you want precision and efficiency, particularly that derived from improvement over manual editing. :-)
