MMORPG to shut down Perl.exe

Today Gungho, the company running MMORPG Ragnarok Online announced the press release that they upgraded their client software so that it doesn't launch correctly if you're running "Perl.exe" or alike on your computer.

They decided to do so since most nasty bots on their RPG system are written in Perl and killing Perl.exe is the most effective way for a defense. This means if you're running Perl based client software like POPFile or Plagger, you have to shut it down before running the game. So lame...

Anyway I guess you can just rename the tools or do things like PAR/Perl2exe to cheat against that.

That's *soooo* lame. Maybe just patching the binary would get around that?

If their License and Terms of Use are anything like WoW's, any method of subverting the anti-botting checks is grounds for account suspension. And if their software's anything like WoW, they have automatic ways of checking the obvious things like patching the binary, attaching a debugger, etc.

Bastards.

I quite agree. WoW also used to (IIRC) read the titlebars of every open window in every application, compare them to a checksum database, and report you for botting if any of the checksums matched.

Caused quite a hubub at the time:

(Note: it may still do this.)

The wrong approach to botting in MMOs

I've often thought it would make much more sense for MMOs to set up a server, or shard, or whatever, on which botting was allowed.

It would let geeky people who want to automate their gameplay, or just create a super-intelligent-pwnzor-bot to do so without disturbing others.
