Well, you can blame Larry Wall (I think) for "retrofitting" Perl into an acronym. I certainly don't blame people for the confusion. You will also note from the 5.8.2. source, in Meta.YML:

Version is 5.008001, for Perl 5.8.2? It looks like somebody forgot to update it, then.
