Business can be really good in times of economic downturn. Our competitors are filing for bankruptcy so fast, we have a hard time picking up all those customers out there.
I think on big difference between most of our competition and us is Perl. Because we actually made software while all the others were just sticking there heads into the books learning incomplete .NET APIs and bloated J2EE framework stuff.
I have just written a CRM app in 10 days + (plus some research and planning time, a day or so). A friend of mine who used to work at SAP said when he looked at it: "That's basically what we do, too". My point is, that if you can write software so fast, that rewriting (not only refactoring) it every so often is cheaper than spending months in "doing it right the first time", then there is something wrong with the current best practices in producing software.
