Any Port in a Storm

The battle of the Gnome Upgrade on FreeBSD was fought all through the weekend. Gnome itself became the casualty, as the ports package database turned into spaghetti. Blackbox arose from the ashes.

Along the way I decided to compile Mozilla. Now that I've got it working, I can't remember why I wanted to compile it...I had a working binary install from mozilla.org anyway. Why? Because I could...because it forced me to straighten my ports database.

Who needs Gnome anyway when you spend 95% of your time in a terminal window or emacs? I've got it back at the office, so I can still stay hip.

ports cleaning

Have a look at portupgrade (/usr/ports/sysutils/portupgrade) for managing ports. It's a really great tool for dealing with these sorts of problems.
