Many, many entries ago I wrote in my journal about the capabilities in the TiBook's built in graphics card for running with two screens.
Since I do not have a VGA screen at home I brought my TiBook to work, yanked the VGA cable from my PC, jerked in in the TiBook, booted and there is was...
Not mirrored, but with more screen realestate.

I started doing this too (albeit with an iBook with modified openfirmware) and it absolutely rocks. I push my LCD monitor to the back of my desk, and re-arrange my screens so that the LCD is logically above the iBook screen (i.e. it's logically above as well as physically). It rocks to have that much screen real estate without a virtual window manager.
OS X also seems to remember alternate screens too - so when I rip it out and plug it into our projector at work, I can use different settings and it remembers each.
