I am currently considering upgrading to OS X 10.2 from 10.1.5, the actual upgrade does not worry me (I will be making a backup though), I am more concerned with all the small things I have tuned, tweaked and customized over time.
I will try to collect some of the material here in my journal, and perhaps others can use them aswell (or comment on them).
Enabling the Root account
Open the "NetInfo Manager" (located in the Applications/Utilities folder).
2. Select "Authenticate" from the "Security" submenu (under the "File" menu item).
3. Select "Enable root account" from the same submenu.
Setting the Hostname
Edit /etc/hostconfig with your favorite editor. Change the line
HOSTNAME=-AUTOMATIC-
to
HOSTNAME="your favorite hostname"
Be careful here. Scot Hacker wrote a couple of weblog entries on oreillynet about how this can interfere with Rendezvous. I believe his problem was that he reset his hostname, and all of a sudden printer sharing stopped working. Epson fobbed him off to Apple, and Apple fobbed him off to Epson, and no one offered to help him figure out what was wrong. Turns out, it was simply resetting his hostname (and breaking Rendezvous) that was the sole cause of problems.Edit/etc/hostconfig with your favorite editor. Change the line HOSTNAME=-AUTOMATIC-
