Google Releases Improved MySQL Code

" It sounds to me like the engineers working on this wanted to get some publicity(maybe since they seem to be working in one of the non-critical areas of the company), and just about any press release from Google seems to get a lot of attention...

So it's not like this is a huge deal for Google as a whole.
While certainly Google's bread and butter, search isn't their only product though. Groups, gmail, news, maps, etc. All have a substantial amount of data with a substantial amount of users.
