With a nod to TorgoX, I humbly submit this Guardian page that is a primer to the glories of St. George's day. There's never a dragon around when you need one.

in the "Faerie Queene". Una whom he saved from the Dragon. There was Duessa too but he dumped her like the ho she was....
Bah! St George is a latecomer

The 'real' traditional English holiday is May day. Most of the traditional stuff has died out, but there's still the 'obby 'oss at Padstow and Minehead, the various Morris sides doing their thing at dawn, a couple of maypoles still standing which'll get danced around probably a few other traditions I've never heard of. Oh yes, and there's the recently instituted May day rally and police action in London.
My favourite bit of May day tradition though has to be the old poem "Hooray! Hooray! the first of May
// Outdoor fucking starts today"
