Biked 24 miles today from Boston to Waltham (and back) along Trapelo Rd., which apparently is Italian for "too many f*cking hills." Also found out that the town of Belmont, through which I passed, was not just a pretty French word, but also descriptive of the terrain. Well, the mont was applicable anyway...

Grab a copy of Rubel's Bikemap (both the Boston and the Eastern Mass editions). Has topographical info and recommended roads.
I usually follow the Charles when doing Boston-Waltham. Depends on where in Waltham you want to be, I suppose. The only use for Trapelo is to test your hill-climbing gears.
Main St. out of Waltham (Rt. 117) is a decent ride through Weston and Lincoln. (I was going to Lincoln, so haven't pushed it any further.)
Rt. 1 through Topsfield is my worst experience with "should've checked the topo first".
