Humor in WindowsME registry

I use Windows Millennium. I'm not proud, but it does games and porn really well. I work on my Linux box. When I want to move files between these machines, I use Samba. That is until I changed something (I think I updated my Red Hat box). In any event, WinMe wouldn't connect to the Linux box anymore. A quick search of google showed what I suspected: winMe encrypts it's smb passwords over the wire. Samba expects plain text passwords. Oy. The solution is to add a value to a deeply buried registry key. When I actually went there, I found this.

Komedy.

Alternatively...

Enable Samba's password encryption. erm.

# You may wish to use password encryption. Please read
# ENCRYPTION.txt, Win95.txt and WinNT.txt in the Samba documentation.
# Do not enable this option unless you have read those documents
    encrypt passwords = yes
    null passwords = yes
    smb passwd file = /etc/samba/smbpasswd
