YAPC day 2: Kida

Kida can't really be released because of Disney policy. Nevertheless Robert wishes it could.

Main need for kida to fulfill was multiple version builds. People still have to use old versions of software. They want to just say "make" once and have it build for all versions.

Date rollback messed up make. If you uncheck out a file, it rolls the date back.

Huge list of examined alternatives:

  • GNU make
  • cons
  • Tmake
  • Jam
  • Make++
  • Ant

Kida has an extendible OO hierarchy. Makefiles are perl code.

Robert's got a lilo shirt. Actually it's a "Lilo and Stitch" shirt.

Kida has an expert system internally that has to be trained for each system. Hmm. Neat.

Disney seems to be replacing some IRIX stuff with Linux.

Parrot's make.pl is similar to Kida.

I was sort of burned out and didn't type much here, either. Robert is a really neat guy from Disney. We got to see "Kida" in the Atlantean alphabet. Hope to see Kida the product some day, or at least something similar built from the concepts presented here.
