Why, oh why, oh why does ebay allow sellers to enter contact phone numbers of "(513) 124-4783," since 124 is not a valid phone exchange? To my knowledge, this number is impossible in the United States. Is it too hard to match that against a simple regex before approving the seller's account?

It used to be that having a 0 or 1 as the middle digit of an exchange number was illegal, but wherever 10-digit dialing is in effect it is now allowed (and leading digit 1 or 0 could equally well be allowed there too. Why build in a future failure?

Because taking it out some day would be easy and because having it in in the meantime could cut down on a lot of fraud.

Update is that the guy with this phone number is at least answering my emails, so maybe I haven't been defrauded. Still hasn't shipped the item I ordered last week, though, but he's claiming he'll send it tomorrow.
