More on GNU ls

I posted the issue I mentioned earlier with GNU ls to their bugs mailing list and was referred to the latest version, which apparently fixes the problem. :)

How many files were there in the directory ? Just in case I come up against this and need to know if this is the problem :)

Er, well, I've been running a program to sort them out to several subdirectories, so I'm not sure I can really find out for sure. I'm estimating about 177,000.

Incidentally, you might see the problem in more than just ls. In trying to sort these out to subdirectories, I was having an awful time with other basic shell tools like find, etc. The worst thing was that apparently you can't tar up 177,000 files, either with Solaris tar or GNU tar.
