Daniel Robbins, founder of the Gentoo distribution, tells the early story of Gentoo (part 1 of a 3 part article). I found interesting here his story of dealing with what he called "freaks" while developing for the Stampede Linux distribution (which I've never heard of). Parallels to a lot of the stories we've heard in the Perl world, and good all around insight for anyone who hopes to help manage an open source project some day.
