I just got nominated to Tau Beta Pi, the engineering honor society. According to them, joining costs "just the price of a few pizzas". And I have to attend a few meetings and complete 2 big projects before I can be initiated.
Question: How is this going to help me in my life? I mean, is belonging to an honor society going to make any difference in the big picture? Oh sure, I guess I could mention it on my resume! Right next to my Perl certification ... oh wait. Really, who would hire someone because they belonged to an honor society. Moreover, just think of all the things I could do with "the price of a few pizzas," not to mention having to complete those projects and attend those meetings. Still, it's a nice accolade, I guess. Talking about pizza is making me hungry.
