Recently I've been looking at the Friend of a Friend (FOAF) RDF syntax. It's basically a way of expressing in RDF tuples that person A is a friend of person B...might have it's uses on use.perl.org. Along the way I learned about a project called Redland which is an RDF library with bindings to Perl, Python, Tcl, Ruby and Java. It looks pretty slick. I think RDF and the semantic web in general are really compelling pie in the sky ideas.
