I've been writing a review of the SliMP3 (summary: it rocks) and discovered the BBC news ticker for it. I used that as a basis for figuring out how to write my own doohickeys that send stuff to the display and read the remote presses. The SliMP3 device transmits all the keypresses back to the server, which tells the screen what to display. The server is written in Perl. Very cool.
So I wrote something that progressively displays my kids names ("W" "WI" "WIL" "WILL" ...) and I'm about 90% of the way through a google news ticker. Next will be a biff-style ticket of my unread mail. Jenine wants to be able to instant message the SliMP3. I've also thought of ASCII art with aalib (scrolling down the image 2 lines at a time!), and a choose-your-path adventure game. A fully-fledged interface to Infocom adventures would rock, but is probably beyond my time limits.
Fun! Oh, and I started work on the CFP for OSCON 2003.

There's not, but they provide a pointer to a (relatively) cheap Linksys 802.11b bridge (model WET11; looks to be in the $100-120 range with a $10 rebate).

As Fletch points out, there isn't. Their FAQ addresses this. Wireless tech still isn't at the point where they could keep the overall cost <$300.--Nat

You could buy a Linksys Wireless Bridge for it but that would set you back $100 or so.
