Hang 'em by their balls

As a historyphile, I'm repulsed by the trade in stolen/looted artifacts, but I'm glad to hear there are art cops. I'm fascinated by the politics and law of the art theft world. There are books set in that world, some good, some bad. Anyone have recommendations?

The Island of Lost Maps is an excellent read and, if you collect maps at all, will break your heart along the way.

Why did I know you'd have a good pointer for me? :-) Thanks, ordered!

:) Darned if I can't find another one that I wanted to recommend but The day they stole the mona lisa is fascinating but, alas, out of print. You might get lucky on abebooks though.

Available used both at
Half.com and Alibris. (There's also another one called "the man who stole mona lisa" if that's the one you really meant).

The man who stole the Mona Lisa is the movie based on the book "The Day They Stole the Mona Lisa" which was about the 1911 theft of said artwork :) ...The book titled 'man who stole...' is a work of fiction.

not exactly art

well, it's not exactly about art, but Booked to Die is a mystery about an ex-cop turned rare book collector. you can tell the author is really into book collecting because he gets into the details of it, explaining how to spot first editions, and so on. really cool if you're into that type of thing.
