At least you can't lose your resume and get stuck. You are always a few hours from being ready to fly again.
I assume you shared Peopleware with your manager, and it did not improve his/her perspective. That is unfortunate.
Here's hoping that your work environment improves or that "mod_perl + telecommute" job searches are bountiful.

actually, Peopleware is sitting on my desk, but I haven't brought it to my manager's attention yet, because...
yesterday, I managed to survive (yet another) round of layoffs. nothing motivates quite like that.
