strike!

I'm contemplating going on strike next week. I've just been handed a project to launch a complicated e-commerce site on the 22nd. I don't have a specification or any data. To add insult to injury it's only priority number 3 on my task list.

Use the default specification

Put up an "under construction" page. Those always look professional.

no specs or data...

Is it written or procured?

Date challenges!

Lately I have learnt a very effective way to counter vague requirements; pose requirements of your own, based on what you need to do. Make the relationship between what you can accomplish and what you need for doing that extremely clear.

-"We want you to create *hand-waving* by the 22nd."

-"In order to do that, I need A, B, and C, and I need to know how D relates to E from that guy over there, and how F works from you, by the day after tomorrow at the latest. If I don't have that information, there will have to be changes in the schedule because this is blocking my work."

If need be, make sure you have this in writing, and cc appropriate suits.

The good thing about this is that if the project management is sincere about making the project succeed, this will work to everyone's advantage. If they are not, all you can do is protect yourself; scew the project, it's neither your fault nor your responsibility any more.
