Down and Out in the Magic Kingdom by Cory Doctorow

It's not as great as the blurbs on the back cover suggest but I enjoyed it nevertheless. Down and out is an interesting view of the future, reminiscent of Gibson, though perhaps cheerier. I liked the concept of "Whuffie", the currency of respect. Overall I'd give it 7/10.

The thing I really didn't like is the packaging, it's one of those 8x5" $12.95 paperbacks rather than the 7x4" $7.99 I prefer. With a big font and generous line spacing it didn't feel like good value for money; feeling short-changed took away from my enjoyment. I like short stories, I just don't like paying a premium for them.

Read it for free

I hate reading stuff on a screen. I prefer to print stuff out. Plus there's the warm fuzzy feeling you get from having a bookcase full of books (or is that just me?).
