If you want to make GIFs with Imagemagick, you might find that they end up pretty big because they won't be LZW compressed. If you don't want to recompile Imagemagick, you can use Gifsicle. It's mainly designed for animated GIFs but it can also be used to optimize them:
gifsicle -O2 -o out.gif < in.gif
